I had the opportunity to visit Luxembourg in December. And again, a small part, this cute little country is not so small! So I visited the city of Luxembourg and its beautiful castles around. If this country is already charming in normal times for its many possibilities of excursions and the reception of its inhabitants, I was particularly seduced by its atmosphere at the time of December and the quality of its markets of Christmas .
Winterlights, the magic of the holidays
Like any city in the north that respects itself, Luxembourg City organizes many events during the holidays. There are no less than 124 trees decorating the squares and streets. 800 elements were illuminated by 200,000 bulbs . If you look up, you’ll also find 40 hanging elements that will bring you some Christmas magic.
Many events are organized throughout the holiday season : there are street storytellers, the traditional circus of Advent, the festival ” fairy winter ” which offers a set of short films on the theme of Christmas at the Cinematheque, shows for the little ones at the Chrëschtdeeg am Theater and the Limpertsberg Wine and Cremant Festival.
Do not miss the must-see for the whole month of December: the ice rink of Knuedler on Ice, place Guillaume II , just in front of the tourist office. And if you do not like sliding, you can sip right next to a glühwein or hot chocolate. This is also where the Food Village of the Christmas market is located .
Because these different markets are full of stalls that will satisfy your appetite. In addition to the Food Village in Piazza William II, there is also the Constitution Square Market, where you can taste specialties from around the world .
Let yourself be tempted by the sweet flavors: gingerbread, shortbread, pancakes or pretzels. Salty lovers will also be delighted with the famous spaëtzle, sauerkraut, raclette or even the famous frostis : a delicious specialty with potatoes that is tasted with compote.
There is also a lot of drinks to enjoy at the Christmas market: gluwhein of course, local beers, hot chocolate but also ponch for childrenor pregnant women!
The city’s Christmas markets are bathed in a very pleasant, soft and intimate atmosphere. Between hot drinks, Christmas music and open fires, I really appreciated the quality of the shops . This changes shops a little too commercial and soulless that we sometimes find at home. Here, the craftsmanship is quality, the products are original and worth the detour.
Each market has its specialty. The market of the place of arms offers you gifts and decoration. On the Place de Paris, you will find an Advent market and on Place du Poit Rouge, a market with charities .
In front of the Grand Ducal Palace, there is a small establishment that will delight all gourmands visiting Luxembourg. It’s the chocolate house ! Held by Nathalie Bonn, this temple of chocolate and pastry will bring you everything that makes you greedy with the holiday season.
